Though controversial, it is thought that fluoride reduces the incidence of tooth decay in both children and adults.1 One of the best sources of fluoride remains fluoridated water. Topical application to the teeth is less effective than fluoride working from inside the body.
There is some controversy over fluoride's role in bone health. Some studies show that optimum fluoride intake strengthens bones while other studies indicate that high levels of the mineral increases the risk of hairline bone fractures.2 Contradicting some previous studies, researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center found long-term fluoride and calcium supplementation reduces fractures and increases bone mass without negative side effects like microfractures.3 The National Research Council Committee for Recommended Dietary Allowances does not include fluoride in its list of essential minerals.
