BILBERRY

Bilberry extract is from the common European plant Vaccinium myrtillus. It is a rich source of the anthocyanoside flavonoids and has a reputed benefit on vision. The first anecdotes of this effect was from British RAF pilots in WWII. These pilots claimed that eating bilberry jam improved their night vision and visual acuity. Since this time there have been many scientific studies supporting these claims. Research shows that anthocyanosides have a positive effect on certain enzymes crucial to vision.

Bilberry has also been shown to serve as a temporary treatment for chronic eye fatigue, extreme myopia, and day blindness. This supplement may be especially beneficial to anyone with visually straining work such as pilots, drivers, students, and folks who do extensive computer work. On a regular basis, there is some suggestion that bilberry may also protect against cataracts and glaucoma. The effects of this herb last about 4 hours after ingestion. Another line of research conducted in Italy found bilberry contributes to a healthy heart by lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood.3

Bilberry is available in tablet, capsule, and tincture form. Look for an anthocyanoside content of 15-25%. Supplements are likely to contain other vision stimulating substances such as bioflavonoids, Vitamin A, beta carotene, and zinc.
