DIGESTIVE AIDS

Digestive aids are enzymes that help with the digestive process. They come in the following forms:

Bromelain

Bromelain is an enzyme that is found in pineapples. In supplemental form, bromelain is employed to aid in the digestion of proteins. It works to ensure the breakdown of foods and is also recommended for diarrhea that can accompany deficiencies in digestive enzymes.1 It is able to lessen bruising, pain, and swelling resulting from injury and can speed recovery time.

Pancreatin

Pancreatin is a pancreatic enzyme that works to normalize the digestive system. A healthy person secretes three kinds of digestive enzymes Ñ lipase, protase, and amylase Ñ to facilitate the breakdown of fat, protein, and carbohydrates. Various conditions, such as cystic fibrosis, alcoholism, and other illnesses can result in deficient production of these enzymes and impair digestion. Pancreatic enzymes derived from porcine sources (pig) are available in supplemental form. These supplements can benefit indigestion and enhance nutrient absorption.2

Lactase

The intestinal enzyme lactase is responsible for breaking down lactose, or milk sugar, into its components, glucose and galactose. Many people do not produce enough lactase to digest lactose. This condition gives rise to the condition known as lactose intolerance, which causes gastrointestinal distress. Lactose intolerance is not an allergic reaction to milk, as is commonly believed. Lactase supplements aid in the break down process.
