SPIRULINA

Spirulina is the name of a microalgae which thrives in sunny climates and alkaline waters across the world. It is particular beneficial because it has a high concentration of several important nutrients: gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), linoleic and archidonic acid, Vitamin B-12, iron, DNA, RNA, essential amino acids, and chlorophyll. It is composed of 60-70% protein. It also contains the pigment phycocyanin, which has been shown to increase the life span of mice with liver cancer.

A year-long study found spirulina eliminated lesions associated with oral leukoplakia, a prelude to cancer of the mouth found in tobacco chewers. Lesions disappeared completely in almost half of the study population. Nearly half of those whose lesions disappeared after initial treatment found the lesions came back within one year of discontinuing the supplements. One gram of freeze-dried spirulina was the dosage used in the study.1

Spirulina may help bolster the immune system and lower cholesterol.2 It also assists in mineral absorption. It is recommended as a component to rejuvenating fasts, as it can cleanse and heal the body while curbing appetite.3 The protein in spirulina may help to stabilize blood sugar, which would benefit hypoglycemics. Spirulina is easily digested.
