URINARY TRACT AIDS

Urinary tract infections are a common health concern for women. This condition is caused by bacteria that bind to the urinary tract and foster infection. Under normal conditions these bacteria are destroyed by urine and immune system defenses. However, during periods of stress, illness, or improper diet these bacteria can thrive, resulting in a urinary tract infection signaled by internal pain during urination. If the infection is not treated it can become chronic and can even travel to the kidneys.

Cranberry extract, either from juice, concentrate, or gelatin capsules, is an effective treatment for these infections and other urinary problems. The cranberry contains compounds such as hippuric acid that inhibit bacteria from sticking to the walls of the bladder. It may work by reducing the pH of urine and increasing its acidity. Increased amounts of hippuric acid hinders bacterial growth. Cranberry extract has also been found to eliminate the odor of urine. It offers relief from the discomfort of dysuria, a condition in women marked by frequent and urgent urination. There has also been some speculation about the benefits of the extract in kidney stones. The hippuric acid content of cranberry may prevent recurring stones and reverse their progression.

In addition to its benefits against infection, cranberry is also very nutritious, containing Vitamins A, C, B-complex, and K, as well as the minerals phosphorous, manganese, iron, and calcium. Traditionally, urinary tract infections have been treated with antibiotics. The disadvantage of these drugs is that they also destroy the friendly bacteria that inhabits the intestine. Urinary tract infections are especially troublesome during pregnancy because pregnant women are not advised to use antibiotics. Cranberry extract appears to be a great alternative because it is effective and safe.
